It is a contrast between what someone says and what one means, while dramatic irony is a contrast between what the characters know to be true and what the readers know to be true. Many writers use irony in their short stories to prove a dramatic point, or just to develop a story for upcoming use. Audens poem Muse des Beaux Arts, which is Museum of Beautiful Arts when translated into English, is more about death and its normal, spontaneous occurrence than it is about a museum. The poem speaks of old Masters and refers to artists: writers, poets, and painters who understood the act of death as a necessary process instead of making excuses for it, using personification to cope with it, or sugar-coating it. These old Masters did not see the need to justify death or find a way to make it easier through embellishment. Although the poet uses a sort of free verse with unstructured rhyme and varying line length he still captures the meaning and conveys his point while keeping the poem unified. The scattered rhymes and the lack of specific meter keep the poem from getting to sing-song which is very fitting considering the subject matter. The poem starts out About suffering they were never wrong, the old Masters: how well they understood and we see that there is a group of people from the past that were wise, but we are not specifically told what it was that they understood. In fact, we are never explicitly told to what the it in the next line; Its human position: how it takes place actually refers. This we must figure out for our own, and based on the poem as a whole we can ascertain that the speaker is referring to the act of dying, death, and loss. We now know that those masters that came before us understood and revered death. The speaker refers to the human position of death and in the next five lines he illustrates the randomness of death; that even while there are many elderly people eagerly awaiting the next life, sometimes children are robbed of the present one. The poem at this point is not cruel or blaming but merely explains the fact that death does not intelligently pick and choose; nature has a role in it. Children who did not specially want it to happen, skating/ On a pond at the edge of the wood, here children take the rightful spot that the aged were reverently, passionately waiting for because nature had a hand in the ice breaking and the childs death. Nature and death sometimes combine to produce tragic results, but just because death is not intelligent does not mean that nature is and the speaker does not want us to blame nature either. The speaker and the old Masters seem to understand that death and nature go hand in hand. Then in the next five lines, which begin again with reference to the old Masters. With the line; They never forgot, the speaker shows how the world keeps on turning and daily life continues as before even at the exact moment that a persons spirit leaves this world. That is what the old Masters realized and never forgot. Life is continuing just as always in the line the dogs go on with their doggy life and the torturers horse/ scratches its innocent behind on a tree. But in this line we find a very interesting match between a torturer and a horse. Notice how the evilness attributed to a man whose occupation is torturing people does not get passed down to his possession: the horse. Even though his master is bad the animal remains innocent and carries on naturally scratching itself on a tree. This is another statement about the innocence of nature; that even when it ends up taking life the act is neither deliberate nor evil. The First Born The title of this poem is The First Born. The poem is set in Australia today. The speaker in the poem, is the Land, which is distressed and franticly searching for her first born, the indigenous Australians who are in a bad condition. The Land continues searching for her first born and asks you whom I bore after which is the white people what had become of the indigenous Australians. The white people were silent and did not reply. An important idea in this poem is the relationship between the indigenous Australians and the white people. The poet seems to express to readers that the indigenous Australian are in a bad condition. Another idea is that all human beings regardless of race are equal and part of the same human family. In terms of emotion, the poet invokes feelings of hurt and anxiety through the Land. The poem suggests that the indigenous Australians are in a bad condition through the use of various literary techniques. With an African American man running for president, the United States has been more focused on race in the last year than any time in the last several decades, but much of the focus has been on the concept that race doesn’t matter. For the characters in Nella Larsen’s â€Å"Passing†, race was everything and although race relations have improve since 1929 when the book was published, it is impossible to believe that race is not still a major factor in the development of personal identity and in social interactions. In the novel, Clare and Irene choose different paths because of their race and in spite of it. Clare hides her past, and her heritage, â€Å"passing for white† while Irene remains a part of the black community of Harlem. Perhaps because of her own mixed ethnicity, Larsen is able to tell the story from the viewpoint of both women, both ashamed and confused by the impact that their race has on their lives. Clare spends much of the book trying to hide her heritage and Irene revels in hers. Had Larsen written at a different time, she might have had Clare suffer some grand cosmic punishment for her deception, but in â€Å"Passing’ it is more Irene who suffers for her choice. Because she remains a part of the black community, she suffers discrimination and humiliation that would have been spared a white woman. The most interesting facet of this novel is that it still enlightens us today about the impact of race on personal identity. Michael Jackson has long been the brunt of many jokes with tabloid speculation that he was lightening his skin, trying to become more white. On the other side of the argument, many African Americans, especially in the rap recording industry, try to make themselves more racially separated than they truly are. This is even true in the race for the White House as every time Barack Obama’s race is mentioned, someone takes great care to point out that his father was an African, not a black American. The underlying tone of the racism in American society today is well-reflect in Larson’s novel. Much like Clare and Irene, America today is not acknowledging its racial history and how that impacts the way people think and act. The hardest part for Clare and Irene comes in the discovery that Clare has been â€Å"passing† as white. Once she is discovered, she is brutalized by fellow African Americans who think they are giving her what she deserves because she has tried to put on airs and act white. She is assumed guilty of any number of other crimes because she lied about her ethnicity and Irene, who often was jealous of the decision that Clare made, feels that she should do nothing to stop the prejudice on both sides because Clare made the decision to try passing. Historically speaking, the idea of â€Å"passing† is made much more poignant when we recall Plessey v. Ferguson in which a quadroon man, one quarter black but capable of passing for white, challenged the laws about a white only railroad car. He was convicted and the court went all the way to the Supreme Court which ruled, at that time (1896) , that any African blood made you black, whether you could pass for Caucasian or not. Obviously, Larsen understood this ruling and its impact on her own life and the life of her fellow citizens of Harlem.
